The Bulga Complex consists of two operations:  open cut mining at Bulga Coal and underground mining at Bulga Underground Operations. The Coal Handling and Preparation Plant, located at Bulga Coal services both operations. The Bulga Complex operates within Mining Lease 1547.

Bulga Coal Surface Operations

Bulga Coal is a dragline, truck and shovel operation targeting the Redbank, Wambo, Blakefield, Glen Munro and Woodlands Hill seams of the Whittingham coal measures.

Bulga Underground Operations

Bulga Underground Operations is a longwall mining operation and has approval to mine the coal from four coal seams: Whybrow, Blakefield, Glen Munro and Woodlands Hill until 2030.

In June 2010, Bulga Underground Operations began longwall mining at the Blakefield South operation.  The Blakefield South mine is currently mining the coal from longwall panel 2.   Preparation is underway to mine the coal from the Blakefield seam to the north of the mining area (Blakefield North), scheduled to commence longwall mining in 2016.
