The Bulga Complex consists of two operations: open cut mining at Bulga Coal and underground mining at Beltana. The Coal Handling and Preparation Plant, located at Bulga Coal services both operations. The Bulga Complex operates within Mining Lease 1547.
Bulga Coal Open Cut
Bulga Coal is a dragline, truck and shovel operation targeting the Redbank, Wambo, Blakefield, Glen Munro and Woodlands Hill seams of the Whittingham coal measures.

Beltana Underground Operations
Beltana is a longwall mining operation and has approval to mine the coal from four coal seams: Whybrow, Blakefield, Glen Munro and Woodlands Hill until 2030. In June 2010, Beltana began longwall mining at the Blakefield South operation. The Blakefield South mine ceased production in January 2011 following an ignition in the underground operating area. Employees have been redeployed to other Xstrata Coal operations until such time as the Blakefield South mine is reactivated in the near future. Preparation is underway to mine the coal from the Blakefield seam to the north of the mining area (Blakefield North), scheduled to commence longwall mining in 2016.
